Baliuag University introduces Canvas

Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) created to aid students and educators to make studying easier and more convenient. It is used by professors to give softcopies of their modules to students for advance reading, reviewing, and further understanding of the lessons. It was also conveniently used by the students to pass their outputs to their professors.

In this modernized way of teaching and learning, Arth Noe Pagtalunan, a BSIT 2nd year student, shared that he prefers using LMS than the conventional way of printing and passing their outputs.“Mas gusto ko na po mag-pass thru Canvas. May tendency kasi na mawala yung hardcopy mo at less gastos na din sa print.” When asked about his thoughts from the previous LMS of Baliuag University, he said that he was satisfied with its performance; but compared to Canvas, Maria Angelica dela Cruz, BSIT 2nd year student said that Canvas is more organized. It has a feature that separates files depending on the subject. Pagtalunan added that this feature of Canvas makes it easier for them to look for files that they need.

With the arrival of Canvas, students were asked to pay for the access of their accounts. Dela Cruz said that they were shocked at first; but when they were able to experience it, she said that it is worth the pay. Pagtalunan said that through Canvas, the students were able to practice fairness and honesty among the students and their professors. He shared that they were asked to answer a quiz for 20 minutes thru Canvas, the rambled the questions to avoid cheating among students, the professors can also monitor the exact time the students passed his/her work, thus ensuring promptness of the students. Canvas uses a pointing scale for giving grades to students called “Speed Grader”, making it easier and faster for professors to check and give a corresponding grade.

Student-engagement is also significant when using Canvas. Dela Cruz and Pagtalunan shared that the University’s calendar of activities can be viewed on it, thus making them updated of the events in the university wherever they could be.

When asked how they would describe their Canvas experience, the students stated that it’s convenient, provides easy access to their files, and very handy through the Canvas phone application.

Studying could be difficult and draining, but it could be easier if we try to seek ways to improve our learning experience. Pagtalunan and Dela Cruz found Canvas convenient and useful to their learning process. What about you? How is your Canvas experience? Share it with us.

BU represents the PH in Thailand

Felina Gail Mar, a third year AB English student from the College of Arts and Sciences, represented the Philippines with two others from Jose Rizal University and Far Eastern University in the 2015 ASEAN Youth Camp in Chiang Rai, Thailand last December 15-19, 2015.

The youth camp was hosted by Mae Fah Luang University and featured delegates from different ASEAN countries. The Philippines had the least number of delegates while Malaysia sent the most number of delegates – seven students. The delegates were nominated by their respective schools’ Office of Student Affairs and chosen by the Ministry of Education or Commission on Higher Education to represent their respective countries.

Topics such as the role of the youth in ASEAN, cross-cultural awareness, and border management were discussed in the program. Afterwards, the delegates were given a guided tour around the different landmarks in northernmost Thailand.

Since returning to the Philippines, Mar joined a youth organization called SEA Youth Builders initiated by Nicole Emellie Yu, the FEU delegate to Thailand, with the aim of sharing what they learned from the camp.

Baliuag University strengthens ASEAN partnership

In an effort to maintain international linkages with ASEAN countries, Baliuag University (BU) has renewed its partnership with Thailand’s Chumphon Sueksa School on April 6, 2015. Mr. Kitti Kittichontawat, director/owner of Chumphon visited the University, along with his faculty members, for the renewal of the Memorandum of Agreement.

Chumphon Sueksa School is a primary elementary school that has collaborated with BU’s College of Education for the practice teaching/on-the-job training of its teacher education students. Trainees receive free accommodation and honoraria for providing English tutorial classes for their on-the-job training.

A significant number of teacher education students have already completed their on-the-job training in the said school. After their OJT, the school management offers teaching jobs to practicumers, resulting in not a few number of BU education graduates working there. In fact, the current principal of the Thai school, Ma. Rhodelynne Gonzalez-Thepwarin, was a graduate of Baliuag University and had also completed her on-the-job training in Chumphon.

With their growing commitment to strengthen the partnership, Chumphon Sueksa School is preparing to send some of its students for an English Camp at the Basic Education Department of the University.

Baliuag University kick-starts career program for graduating students

Baliuag University (BU) has launched a career training program for graduating students last March 21, 2015, in partnership with Berlitz and Avalerion Capital Pte. Ltd. Berlitz is the world’s premier language services firm that provides language instruction to students and professionals all over the world, while Avalerion Capital, Pte. Ltd. is a company incorporated in Singapore that seeks to build long-term value, growth and employment with their portfolio companies. This is the partnership’s first endeavor in the Philippines, with BU as the premiere university to partner with them.

The program, dubbed “Test Your Skills-A Kick-Start Career Development Event for Graduating Students” aims to prepare Information Technology (IT) and Business Administration (BA) graduating students for the real world of work through industry specific language training and soft skills development. The kick-start training offered business English and career development programs like networking, business relationships, markets, advertising, customer service skills, resume writing, meetings, priorities and strategies, human resources, financial documents, negotiations and interview skills.

The program resulted in immediate job offers from some of the participating companies like Concentrix, Teleperformance, Light and Hope, Computer Doctor, and SIA Engineering through Apertura Enterprise. Thus, many of Baliuag University’s IT and business graduates are assured of a job waiting at their doorsteps right after graduation.

Comm Arts Students attend Two Conferences

The Communication Arts Juniors attended two mass media conferences in August. On August 3, the group joined hundreds of other Communication Arts students in the 9thAnnual Comm Guild Conference of Journalism and Mass Communication students of the Philippines held at the AFP Theater inCamp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. This year’s theme was “Social Awareness: A Shared Responsibility of Media and the Community”.

Several media personalities served as resource speakers in the conference. Among them were Claire Delfin, Senior News Reporter of GMA 7, Martin Andanar, Head of News5 Everywhere and Michael Angelo Lobrin, a best-selling author and motivational speaker.. The last speaker was   Mae Panera.k.a Juana Change, a respected director, actress, and political activist.

Before the event ended, the annual COMM GUILD Awards for Radio and Television were presented to the various winners. Comm Arts Chair Theresa de Guzman presented the 2014 Best Female Field Reporter award to Kara David.

On August 17, the Comm Arts students attended the 11TH EDUKCIRCLE Convention on Media Communication at the UP Theater in UP Diliman. “Media and Politics: Reporting Philippines’ Recent Biggest Political Scandals” was the theme of this year’s event.

The line upof speakers was led by Dr. Clarita Carlos, a political analyst and UP professor who spoke on the role of media in politics. The second speaker was Mr. Michael Angelo Lobrin, President of LIFE Enrichment Consultancy and a popular motivational speaker.

Asenior reporter from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, NancyCarvajaltalked about CoveringPolitical Scandals.Ma.Theresa De Guzman, chair of theBU Communication Arts Department University joined the panel of reactors to Carvajal’s lecture.

The conference ended with the presentation of the 4thEdukCircle Awards to well-known broadcast and film personalities. The best documentaries made by the participants were also recognized.

NSTP and Adarna House partners for Kwentuhan sa Bahay na Bato

A total of 79 Day Care, Private Pre-School and early Elementary School Teachers attended the Kwentuhan sa Bahay na Bato: A Klasrum Adarna Storytelling Workshop of the National Service Training Program in partnership with Adarna House, Inc. on August 16, 2014.

Designed for parent volunteers, day care workers, preschool, and early elementary teachers, the workshop focused on the tools a storyteller can use and how these tools can be maximized at the storyteller’s advantage. It provided tips on preparing storytelling sessions, ways to tell a story and what stories to tell for a particular audience.

Ms. Jolizbeth Justo or Teacher Dyali , a teacher, storyteller and workshop facilitator of Adarna House since 2007 led the workshop participants to the discussions and activities.

BU – IE Students Attend ProPlanner Training

Senior IE’s (17 students) attended the three-day training session on BU’s newly-acquired IE software program, the ProPlanner. The training was conducted by Mr. Robin D. Owens (BSIE, MMM, MBA), Asia Pacific Managing Director, last June 16-18, 2014 at the IT Bldg. Room 201.
ProPlanner is composed of three very useful tools for IE students, which is a big help in their classroom training and in their on-the-job assignment. These three modules are:
• ProTime Estimation – which organizes time and motion study elemental data in an easy-to-use spreadsheet format. Benefits of using the ProTime are:
• It greatly reduces estimation time;
• It improves accuracy and consistency of activity times;
• It identifies lean improvement opportunities;
• It generates time study reports automatically, that aids in the analysis and methods improvement;
• FlowPlanner – automatically generates flow diagrams and calculates statistics such as travel distance, time, and costs. Application of FlowPlanner enables IE’s to see how layouts should be arranged and where excessive people and material handling can be eliminated from the process. The ultimate result is a smooth flow with less waste.
• ProBalance – was designed by Industrial Engineers to create the most efficient single- and mixed-model assembly lines quickly and easily, while minimizing errors often found during deployment. Whether assigning new assembly lines, adding new products and/or product enhancements to existing lines, or changing product mix and production rate, ProBalance will ensure the most efficient design possible.

During the 3-day training session, the IE students were given the opportunity to actually apply the 3 modules on sample problems. Mr. Owens ably conducted the lecture portion, after which, he guided the students on the hands-on application. Certificates of Participation were given the IE students by Mr. Robin Owens and Dean Leonardo Surio.
Indeed, the first batch of the IE students who have undergone the ProPlanner training are very fortunate; getting the learnings from the IE guru himself, Mr. Robin Owens, who had extensive industry experience as an IE and as manufacturing manager of leading companies in the US, like Boeing.
With the acquisition of this valuable IE software, BU’s IE should become more competitive when it comes to industry- and corporate-sourcing for IE applicants.

School officials, librarians, teachers, professionals, reviewers, tutors, and book enthusiasts gathered for the 18th Philippine Academic Book Fair, the annual five-day event organized by the Academic Booksellers Association of the Philippines (ABAP) from July 9 to 11, 2014 at the Megatrade Hall 1, 5th Bldg. B, SM Megamall, EDSA, Mandaluyong City.

In preparation for the upcoming accreditation visits for Business Administration and Psychology, Dean Wilhelmina Neis, Mr. Amado Policarpio, Mr. Alvin Almajose, Dr. Rolando Calma, Mrs. Loida Navoa, Mrs. Elenita Maglaque, Mrs. Ma. Theresa de Guzman, Mrs. Alma Dela Cruz, with selected librarians, Ms. Nancy Mabunga, Ms. Glenda Felizardo, Mrs. Josephine Descutido, and Mr. Robert Tubis participated in the said event.

The book fair features the latest academic books, journals, references and other materials for educational institutions.
At the same time, Dr. Juan C. Buenrostro, Jr., together with Ms. Lynderlitte M. Maglaque, Ms. Nancy Mabunga, Ms. Jennifer Samontanez, library staff and faculty of BLIS Department, attended the forum entitled “IT Curriculum for Philippine LIS Education: Focusing on the Dynamic Needs of the LIS Profession” sponsored by the Philippine Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (PATLS) in collaboration with ABAP’s 18th Philippine Academic Book Fair.
The three-day Book Fair was supported by the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education.

Bulacan Public Librarians Association (BPLA) headed by Mr. Marlon Hipolito (BU BLIS’ 2008) as its president, in coordination with Samahang Pangkasaysayan ng Bulacan (SAMPAKA) sponsored a free Seminar-Workshop entitled “Writing Local History” with the main purpose of discussing the importance of preserving local history.

The said event was conducted in the Municipal Library of Baliwag last May 16, 2014 with Mr. Dennis Galvez, a history professor and also a local historian of Baliwag as resource speaker. Among the participants was Mayor Carol Dellosa, the BU library staff headed by Dr. Juan C. Buenrostro, Jr., CAS faculty members, Ms. Lina Rivera, Mrs. Milagros Perez, Mr. Noel Mercado, the Baliuag Municipal Library librarians headed by Ms. Resurreccion Gaspar, and the members and officers of Bulacan Public Librarians Association (BPLA) and the officers and members of the Samahang Pangkasaysayan ng Bulacan (SAMPAKA).

In an age of rapid technological advances, a strong educational program is essential for a certain country in order to produce globally competent graduates. As of now, our country is not educating enough technologically skilled and knowledgeable workers, a situation that will compromise our competitive advantage in an increasingly global economy. To support a vision of global competency which ensures that all students receive high quality instruction, the Department of Education recommends — K-12. K to 12 is defined as kindergarten to the 12 years of combined elementary and high school education. Having that into context, Baliuag University is K-12 ready. Not to mention that our University, particularly, is the host school for the week-long bridge program this summer — to prepare education practitioners on this breakthrough.
